The squirrel family (Sciuridae) includes
some 273 species. There are 66 species in the United States and
Canada. They include the ground squirrels, tree squirrels, flying
and antelope squirrels and chipmunks, marmots and prairie dogs.
The name sciuridae means "shadetail"
and refers to the generally large bushy tail that many squirrels
have. Of the tree squirrels, this group includes the gray, red
and flying squirrels.
Squirrels feed on nuts, seeds, insects
and fruits.
Some tree squirrels have litters twice
per year and others just one. The litter usually consists of
from 3 to 5 young. The gestation period is around 40 to 45 days. The
squirrels build large leafy nests high in trees. The Western
Gray Squirrel builds a nest with bark and sticks. Tree squirrels
prefer woodlands but are found all over in neighborhoods and
parks.
