Elephants are the largest and most powerful land animals alive in the world today. They inhabit the tropical jungles and grassy plains of Asia and Africa and are mighty enough to be safe from attack by any other living wild creature.
The elephant's hide is thick, grey, leathery and tough. It is about one inch thick. An elephants eyelashes are over five inches long. Elephants have large heads, small eyes and large fanlike ears. Their teeth include the second pair of upper incisors that develop into their large tusks, which continue to grow throughout the animal's lifetime.
The long, flexible and muscular trunk is really the elephants lengthened nose and upper lip. (By the way, the name "trunk" appears to be based on a misunderstanding of the French word "trompe," which means trumpet or proboscis.) The elephant does not drink through its trunk, but sucks up water and squirts it into the mouth.
The elephant is a vegetarian. It feeds on foliage, grass canes, fruit, tubers and bark.
