This is a very old
breed, originating in Afghanistan. It was once
believed that Afghan hounds existed in Egypt, but so far there
is no basis for this being true. It is probably a blending of
a variety of breeds found in the region. The long fine coat is
of a type found in breeds of high altitudes. They were introduced
in England in the 19th century.
A large, noble looking dog with
a dignified air. It is 27 to 29 inches high and weighs around
60 pounds. The head is long and narrow. The nose is black or
brown. The ears are carried flat to the head and have long, silky
hair. The most common colors are white, fawn, black and tricolor.
These dogs have a sweet personality
and must be trained gently. They are sensitive and very intelligent.
They have a tendency to be aloof with strangers. They were originally
used as shepherds and as hunters, but in Europe and America they
are considered a luxury dog. They need to be exercised daily.
The coat needs frequent brushing.
