You can find the Walrus (Odobenus rosmarus) in Arctic waters. This is a very large seal; both the male and female have tusks. Walruses are from 9 to 12 feet long and weigh from 1800 pounds (females) to 2700 pounds (males). The walrus is a social animal and lives in groups. Because they are bottom feeders, they live on clams, whelks, and sea cucumbers and other sea life that can be found in sediments at about 230 feet below the water. They do not actually eat the shells, but can suck the meat from the shell. It is the during the months of April through June that the Walrus have their young. There is a 12 month gestation period. The calf remains with its mother for about two years.
