The hippopotamus is a large animal with a barrel-shaped body and short limbs; it may reach a length of 14 feet, a height of 4 feet at the shoulder and weighs 4 tons. The skin is almost hairless and is two inches thick in places. The color is greyish black above, lighter and pinkish below.
